  • Does it Really Matter Where You Buy Your Pool and Spa Chemicals?

  • With summer in full swing, the cleanliness and clarity of your pool and/or spa water is of utmost importance. There are a variety of factors that can affect your water, but it’s important to understand the critical role that chemicals play in maintaining the overall quality.

+ Feeling frazzled with water chemistry? Stop into our store with a water sample to get a free water test and one-on-one assistance. Or even better, attend one of our pool schools to get all of your chemical questions answered!

The bottom line is this: pool and spa chemicals are a necessary expense in order to keep your water clean, clear, and enjoyable. However, some of our customers have asked…chemicals are chemicals, no matter where I buy them…right? While it may seem counterintuitive, the answer is a resounding NO.  It’s true that “big box” retailers are able to offer pool and spa chemicals at seemingly competitive prices, so it’s no wonder homeowners turn to this option in an attempt to save a few bucks. Unfortunately though, this strategy may do more harm than good in some cases! Believe it or not, there IS a difference between the chemicals sold at big box retailers and those sold at professional pool supply stores. Here’s the lowdown:

     1. Quality, Quality, Quality

One of the biggest differences between the chemicals sold at big box retailers and those sold at pool supply stores is quality. Though the ingredients may look the same, products from non-specialty retailers are rarely as potent as those sold in a pool store. Since big box retailers are namely concerned with offering a low price, it is not uncommon for manufacturers to add fillers to the formulations that are packaged for discount stores. While you may pay a bit more up front for chemicals at the pool store, they will perform better than these diluted versions, which you’d need to use more of to achieve the same effect.

    2. Personalized Instruction

Another one of the biggest advantages of purchasing chemicals from a pool supply store is that the staff is trained in water chemistry. Just bring a water sample into our store, and we’ll test it for free and provide you with the information you need to keep your pool and/or spa looking crystal clear! You certainly won’t speak with any pool or spa experts at your local big box retailer or get any personalized instruction. Working with us on your water chemistry keeps things simple and takes the guesswork out of taking care of your pool. That leaves you with more time to enjoy your backyard. Now what’s not to love about that?
